Auditions for our next show, Naomi Iizuka's ALOHA, SAY THE PRETTY GIRLS are all wrapped up. We are so blown away by the amount of talented people who came out to audition for us. The actors in this city have so much to offer. Go Chicago theatre community!

We extend a special thank you to the Serbian American Museum St. Sava for hosting our auditions and callbacks in their awesome space and for just being really gracious and accommodating in general. Thanks, guys! (And because they're a cultural/arts center, they often have cool Serbian-related theatrical and musical performances. Check 'em out!)

It's the day before the show, y'all.

The Brown Paper Box Co. presents CHARACTER BREAKDOWN: A Miscast Cabaret this Saturday, March 23 at 8pm. This one-night cabaret will feature appearances from The Brown Paper Box Co. artistic associates and former cast members performing as characters they would never play due to age, gender, voice type, race, etc.

Get to know Artistic Associate and Character Breakdown coordinator DANNY SPAGNUOLO (Man of La Mancha, Light Opera Works; Chicago, Little Theatre on the Square; Pippin, Bohemian Theatre Ensemble)

-----------------------------

Q) What's the first word that comes to mind when you hear 'miscast?'
A) No.

Q) Have you ever been miscast?

A) Probably, but I'm too vain to admit it. I will say that in high school I was Fred Graham in "Kiss Me, Kate," and he was a womanizing Shakespearean baritone. I think those are three words that don't come to mind when someone thinks of me.

Q) Without giving too much away, what can our audience expect with your number?

A) That I've watched Seth Rudetsky's "Obsessed" videos on Playbill.com too much!

Q) Upon first glace when you walk into an audition, what is your character 'type?'

A) Multi-ethnic character actor/singer/dancer.

Q) But what people don't know about you is .......

A) I'm really just Italian. Boring.

Q) Last good movie you saw?
A)
Beasts of the Southern Wild

Q) Current show running in town you're recommending to friends?

A)
See What I Wanna See at Bailiwick Chicago, and I had the pleasure of joining Hellcab at Profiles Theatre for the final three weeks of their run.

Obie the Cat Taking "Character Breakdown" Notes

3/22/2013

This casting is so wrong. (And yet...so right.)

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN: A MISCAST CABARET will feature appearances from BPBCo. artistic associates and past cast members performing as characters they'd never play due to age, gender, voice type, race, you name it. Yes, this event is all kinds of mixed-up wrongness, and it's happening tomorrow night, Saturday, March 23, only.

As seating has been filling up, we urge you to reserve your tickets ahead of time on Davenport's website!

Now, bring on the cat:
Picture
So there I was, taking notes while Brown Paper Box Co. co-founder and artistic associate Michelle Kritselis worked on her CHARACTER BREAKDOWN number with musical director T.J. Anderson on the piano. Then bam, artistic associate Nick Shoda's cat, Oberon, hopped on my lap and plopped down on my notebook.

Meow.

I'm not sure what kind of acting notes Obie had for Michelle, but this much is clear: people and pets, friends and felines, strangers and strays alike will enjoy the miscast crooning we're serving up at Davenport's Piano Bar & Cabaret tomorrow night, March 23. Hope you can make it!

------------------------------------

Q) What's the first word that comes to mind when you hear 'miscast?'
A) Russell. Second word? Crowe. Sorry, mate.

Q) Have you ever been miscast?
A) Well, I wasn't the most limber Scarecrow there ever was...

Q) Without giving too much away, what can our audience expect with your number?

A) What's better than performing as 1 worldly woman? Performing as 4 worldly women.

Q) Upon first glace when you walk into an audition, what is your character 'type?'

A) Back in high school it was always the father. Taller dudes always got/get that wrap in high school. Nowadays - if I were to start auditioning for roles again - it would probably be a mix of the chubby best friend or the non-clubby gay guy.

Q) But what people don't know about you is .......

A) I'm super skinny and very straight. Surprise!

Q) Last good movie you saw?
A) Saw Les Miserables two times in three days. Couldn't help it. Also loved Zero Dark Thirty.

Q) Current show running in town you're recommending to friends?

A) Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind is a perennial favorite. Plus, The Book of Mormon is funny as hell with Nic Rouleau and Ben Platt.

Michelle Kritselis' Breakdown

This one-night cabaret will feature appearances from The Brown Paper Box Co. artistic associates and former cast members performing as characters they would never play due to age, gender, voice type, race, etc.

Get to know BPBCo.'s Marketing Director and co-founder MICHELLE KRITSELIS (2012 Reefer Madness! staged reading; dramaturg for To Tree and Godspell).

-----------------------------

Q) What's the first word that comes to mind when you hear 'miscast?'
A) Type. When I read in a review that a performer was "miscast," it often means that (s)he is playing a role against character type. I think this is a valid complaint if the actor lacks the ability to play the role, but otherwise, the demand that actors always play their type is very limiting. Like, I wanna see an ugly ingenue once in a while. There, I said it.

Q) Without giving too much away, what can our audience expect with your number?
A) The audience can expect pretty music and lots of emotions. What, too vague? By "emotions," I mean that during my song, I'm going to burst into tears, wring my hands a lot, and finish by flipping the piano over in a fit of rage. (Just kidding, I'm not. ((Or am I?? (((YOU'LL HAVE TO SEE THE CABARET TO FIND OUT!)))))) But in all seriousness, my song has to do with the frustration of not measuring up to a certain ideal, and I think everyone in the audience can relate to that feeling.

Q) Upon first glace when you walk into an audition, what is your character 'type?'
A) I am a multifaceted individual with a rich and complex inner life, and I WILL NOT BE PIGEON-HOLED BY THESE HACKNEYED CHARACTER TYPES!
That, and "Neurotic Girl Next Door."

Q) But what people don't know about you is .......
A) I could play an awesome Phantom of the Opera, on account of my hideous hemi-facial disfigurement and love of capes.

Q) Last good movie you saw?
A) I'm too cheap to go to the movies often, so the last good movie I saw was on DVD and from the mid-'70s:
Seven Beauties (Pasqualino Settebellezze). I first encountered it a few years ago for an International Women Film Directors class I was TAing, and I loved it. It's about a WWII Italian army deserter who gets captured and imprisoned in a German concentration camp. It's darkly comic and disturbing and moving all at once, and I think everyone should see it.

-----------------------------

Q) What's the first word that comes to mind when you hear 'miscast?'
A) OutKast. You'd never want to Miscast OutKast! I'm sorry.

Q) Have you ever been miscast?
A) I was once cast as the "vixen" ensemble member in a children's production of PIPPIN. That was... different.

Q) Without giving too much away, what can our audience expect with your number?
A) Delightful dueling duet.

Q) Upon first glace when you walk into an audition, what is your character 'type?'
A) Every twentysomething gal with brown hair. (But I can wear a wig if that'll get me the part!) or: Ingenue or supporting/comedic

Q) But what people don't know about you is.....
A) I was once given the gang name "Phelony."

Q) Last good movie you saw?
A)
Django Unchained

Q) Current show running in town you're recommending to friends?
A) Letters-X, at the Apollo

A) A lifetime movie called

Q) What's the first word that comes to mind when you hear 'miscast?'

The Hobbit, but that worked surprisingly well.

Q) Without giving too much away, what can our audience expect with your number?

A) A song that doesn't fit my age, gender, or race

Q) Upon first glace when you walk into an audition, what is your character 'type?'

A) It seems to vary. I'm usually cast as either "quirky," "sexy," or "evil."

Q) But what people don't know about you is .......
A) I just wanna play a doe-eyed ingenue Godamnit!

Q) Last good movie you saw.
A)
Argo was pretty good.

Q) Current show running in town you're recommending to friends?
A)
The Book of Mormon. Not only is it amazing, but it features one of my students, James Meredith.
