"PROUD AT MARY'S": Big Wheels Keep On Turning

It's PRIDE month 2014, and we're ready to celebrate.

PROUD AT MARY'S stemmed from the joy I felt during our recent run of A NEW BRAIN. The pride I felt toward every artist's contribution was overwhelming at our final performance back in March (oh, the tears!), and  I wanted to somehow share those talents and feelings in a new cabaret performance.

Justin (MARY's pianist) and I asked a handful of gracious past BPBCo. participants to take part in an evening of songs and stories focusing on one little word: pride. They filled out a mini survey ("Who's the most proud of you?" "When did you discover your sexual identity?") that helped shape the show into a personalized showcase. Whether lesbian, gay, bi, trans, questioning, or a straight ally, June 1st was a huge milestone for Illinois citizens—and we want to sing about it.

From REEFER MADNESS! to A NEW BRAIN, we've been fortunate to work with many amazing Chicagoland artists whose pride in their work shines through their performances. These artists embody PROUD AT MARY'S central theme: pride in who we are, where we've come, and where we're going.

I'm thrilled to share it with you this weekend.

Same-sex marriage is now legal in the state of Illinois, we have great past Brown Paper Box Co. participants lined up, AND winter seems to be over (for real this time).

It's time to celebrate!

We're not the best at keeping secrets, so we thought we'd whet your appetite with a list of the composers being featured at June 13 and 14's PROUD AT MARY'S cabaret at Mary's Attic.

Marvin Hamlisch
Georgia Stitt
Jack Yellen
Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez
Stephen Sondheim
Paul Williams and Ken Ascher
Stevie Wonder
William Finn
Tony Yazbek
Jeanne T. Arrigo
Andrew Lippa
Harold Arlen
Carole King
Fiona Apple
PROUD AT MARY'S is a mix of pop songs, show tunes, personal thoughts, and stories about being gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, questioning, and straight. Tickets for the 7:30 P.M.  performances are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.
