![]() What is your role on the staff of The Baltimore Waltz? I'm Anna's understudy! This role is both funny and heart breaking! Anna's a wonderfully complex woman- something I love about Paula Vogel's work, there is no room for weak women in her pieces. Have you ever worked on a play by Paula Vogel before? I was familiar with her work - this was actually one of the first plays we worked on in Script Analysis in undergrad, so I'm a big fan. This is my favorite of hers, I love the exploration of sibling relationships and how your whole perception can change when something drastic happens to them or you. How many languages do you speak? 2! I'm Fluent in American Sign Language. Tell us about your siblings. I have one older sister and we're very close, like obnoxiously close, I'm sure. The best thing I've done is pull off surprising her. She's very good at finding out information, no matter how well hidden-she's super intuitive. But during my first year here in Chicago, and I flew back on her birthday as a surprise present, but told her I wouldn't be able to make it home. Her husband had to drop me off around the corner of their house so I could sneak up on her. She cried. I won best birthday present. It was great. Have you ever been to Baltimore, Europe, or the hospital? I'm from Bawlmer, hon! My favorite part of the city is Hampden. It's this kitschy little strip of the city with lots of local business and cute, artsy shops. It's where John Waters and Divine hung out. Caitlin will be going on for Anna on February 9th in The Baltimore Waltz, opening January 20th. Tickets are on sale now!

![]() What is your role on the staff of The Baltimore Waltz? Lighting Designer - I love how much lighting can effect a show without ever really being noticeable. If I do my job right, the audience won't ever think about the lights, but how they view the show and how they feel about it can change greatly depending on the lighting choices that are made. Have you ever worked on a play by Paula Vogel before? I have to admit that I've heard the name before, but haven't read or seen anything else of hers. I suppose that makes The Baltimore Waltz my default favorite! How many languages do you speak? English for now, although I am dabbling in learning French. Tell us about your siblings. I have one younger sister. The best things we've done together are probably family vacations to our parents' cabin in Northern Wisconsin. The worst things are classified and I plead the fifth. Have you ever been to Baltimore, Europe, or the hospital? I've been to Europe and the hospital. Both were memorable, though Europe was much more fun. The hospital was less fun, but I did come out of it with a perfect smile (I went in for jaw surgery). Check out Eric's lighting in The Baltimore Waltz, opening January 20th. Have you ever worked on a play by Paula Vogel before? I’ve never worked on a Paula Vogel play professionally, but I spent some time studying How I Learned To Drive in college. Like Baltimore Waltz, she takes one of life's most difficult situations and opens it up with humor and gravity. It’s a play you can’t stop thinking about. How many languages do you speak? Just the one. English. I’m pretty good at speaking toddler, though. Tell us about your siblings. I have two amazing brothers. One is a chef in downtown Chicago, and the other works in finance in New York. They’re such different, lovely people. When my eldest brother studied in Germany for a year while he was in high school, we corresponded in letters - actual paper letters, with stamps. We could have easily done email, but for some reason we fell into the rhythm of putting pen to paper instead of fingers to keyboard. I still have all the letters he wrote, including a rather colorful drawing he made of his host family’s home. I treasure them as I treasure both my brothers. Brothers are awesome. Have you ever been to Baltimore, Europe, or the hospital? Europe is definitely the most memorable of the three because BREAD. And wine. And dinners with lovely people that last four hours. Hear Catherine's dialect work in The Baltimore Waltz, opening January 20th. Tickets are on sale now! ![]() Who do you play in The Baltimore Waltz? I play Carl, the protagonist's brother and (I like to think) best friend. I was so stoked about Carl because of his bravery and willingness to stand in the grey area. He's smart, interesting, a little cynical, and scared. That kind of complexity makes for a strong character. Have you worked on a play by Paula Vogel before? During my second year in the conservatory at Arizona Repertory Theatre, we did Paula Vogel's How I Learned to Drive, which is--I think--her masterpiece. It just so brilliantly and effortlessly sews together all of the strongest elements of her earlier work: a smart framing device; complex familial relationships; and three-dimensional, imperfect characters. She says in an interview that Drive is about "the gifts we receive from people who harm us," which just kind of blew my mind at the time with its pervasive truth, and has continued to do so in the years to follow. How many languages do you speak? Two: English and español. Tell us about your siblings. I have three siblings! We are, in order: Johncie, Kent, Paul Michael, and Karen. When were little, my brother and I would play a really intense version of "cops and robbers" with our cousins wherein we would use baking flour in Ziploc baggies as "cocaine" and try to smuggle it between our houses. Looking back, I'm mostly just really proud of our creativity. Have you ever been to Baltimore, Europe, or the hospital? I studied abroad in Romania and Hungary during college, and my most recent trip to the hospital was when I broke my foot last year tap dancing in a show two days before we opened. I was out for the entire eight-week run, I haven't put on tap shoes since, and you can't make me. See Paul Michael Thomson in The Baltimore Waltz, opening January 20th. Tickets are on sale now! |
